NOW IN KUCHING

Hi everybody.  The flight to Kuching was incredibly easy - although while I was having my carry-ons checked, the checkers were upset about anything shaped like a knife - who knew that nail files looked so ominous.  And, oh yea, Charlie made the metal detector go off for no good reason.  Our suitcases showed up just like magic.  I guess that great suitcase dump in the Singapore airport works like a charm.

Below is a photo of one of the shops in the Singapore Airport.  No, I wasn't the only weirdo taking snaps of the M and M men - + Charlie.

We are staying in a hotel that looks over the Saranak river.  The photo below is out our window!  After last night's windowless room - this is a real treat.

Once we got settled we went across the street from the hotel and took a walk along the river walk.  The next two photos are looking to the west - followed by looking to the east.

The photo below is of a  water taxi - the boatman steers from the front.

Some photos follow of the town near the hotel.

The sculpture below was too nifty not to have its photo taken.

When our walk began it was probably 90 ° and very humid.  While the sun was still shining it began to rain - then it began to pour.  I was told it rains a lot here, but good grief.  This isn't even the rainy season which is from November to February.  While I've been writing the blog - it did it again.  A photo along the river after most of the rain passed us by.

Tomorrow we're taking a car ride, then a boat ride along the Lemanark river to a Long House.  The name of the housing where the native Borneo people live.  (The old  head hunter guys).  We'll spend the night in a hotel in the area.  After that we're coming back to the hotel in Kuching.  We may - or may not have internet in the jungle.  Until the next connection.
