ALOHA - A TRIP TO THE BIG ISLAND - HAWAII

We got to the LA airport very early.  Got our flight to Kona.  Easy flight 5 hours.  We haven't been to the big island in years, and we never were on the west side of the island.  The closest we got was a half-hearted drive from Volcano House toward the west.  After about 20 minutes - we gave up.  This time. Straight to the west.  Most interesting thing this time, the runway at Kona is built up from the rumpled looking lava underneath.  It's at least 2 feet above the black lava base.  Drove to the Sheraton.  Somewhat discouraging that since I've aged a bit, Charlie and I are always offered 1st floor hotel rooms.  Do I look THAT old that I can't make it up a flight of stairs?   : (.  Here's a view from the hotel.
