Hi everybody,
We got to Luxor yesterday morning and went to the Al Moudira hotel. I've included some inside and out side photos this morning. You know, Shaherizade meets Tatouine. It was about 1 million degrees here. The area near the Nile is green and cultivated (here sugar cane and corn). One step beyond the river basin is the Sahara desert - it makes the Mojave seem like Eden. Nothing but sand and rocks for as far as you can see - and we could see a lot from the plane!
We've never done this before - but one of our first actions here was to jump in the pool. 1) It was a gorgeous pool and 2.) it was about 1 million degrees. 3.) as far as we can see - we're the only people staying here. Nice to make a huge hotel, just for us. Or maybe we're the only stupid folks who come when it's 1 million degrees. We had lunch. and hid in our room for a bit.
At 5 we got a ride to the Luxor Museum. I have a new favorite Sobek - I can't remember what he's the god of but it's a man with the head of a crocodile. Very nifty. No photos in the museum. We then went to the Mummification museum. We can have Wally around for ever - all we need is linen strips and resin - kind of an epoxied dog. The most interesting thing there were beautiful canoptic jars. Always 4 for every tomb. Human head - held the liver, hawk's head - held the intestines, jackel head - held the stomach, baboon head held the lungs. The heart stayed with the mummy, and they dumped the brains.
We then opted for an Egyptian dinner. Our favorite Egyptian dish is a lentil soup here. It's spicy and wonderful - check google for great Egyptian lentil soup.
We then went to the Karnak temple music and light show. Very dramatic, kind of Disney meets Karnak. The oddest thing there were the dimensions of the place. The columns, representing papyrus plants are amazingly huge. Even from a distance they don't seem so big - but in amongst them it's amazing!
'Til we can post again.....
